My first day training with Jes in January of 2008, I had no idea what to expect. I was nervous that she would judge me for the fifty-or-so extra pounds I was carrying. I wondered if she would think that a woman like me had no business working out with a personal trainer. My fears were completely unfounded. She asked me to describe my goals, listening closely, but without judgment. I told her I was interested in losing weight and increasing my endurance, but I was struggling to find time to go to the gym with a demanding schedule as a PhD student, teaching assistant, and small business owner. The lesson I learned was that Jes works with you, where YOU are.
Form and safety are of the utmost importance to Jes. One thing that immediately impressed me was that Jes watched my form so closely that within the first few minutes of being on the stepper on that first day, she noticed that one of my feet tends to turn in slightly, affecting my form. Her vigilance to form has never lessened. After experiencing a knee injury, Jes was really patient with me as I eased back into working out. She is also a wealth of information. I am someone who really wants to understand why I’m doing an exercise and how it works. She is always able to explain complex human physiology in ways I can easily understand.
While I have not yet lost all the weight that I hope to, I have seen an increase in my strength and endurance. This is perhaps best exemplified by the fact that I no longer need to schedule an hour-long nap after my sessions with Jes, which were essential for my first month of working out with her. Tackling beyond just the working out part of her clients’ fitness, Jes has worked with me to identify the mental and emotional components that may impede my weight loss.
Now, I don’t want you to get the idea that working out with Jes is all work. Yes, you’ll work up a sweat and your heart will be racing, but it is fun. Sometimes at the end of the hour, I realize she tricked me into talking and laughing all the way through the workout. I had so much fun, I will wonder if I actually worked out. The next day, when my abs are aflame and the soreness of my legs cause me to avoid stairs at all costs, I realize that, yes, that was one heck of a work out.
So if you are looking to lose 15, 25, 50, or 100 pounds, if you’d like to run your first marathon, or if you are an athlete looking to enhance your performance, Jes is the trainer for you. I highly recommend working out with Jes as your personal trainer.
